The desire to have a child arises at a certain point in time in the life of every couple. However, sometimes medical conditions do not allow them to have one.

A boon to such childless couples is the method of IVF and Surrogacy.

A few decades ago, there was no solution for infertile couples who desired to have a child. But thanks to medical technology, IVF and surrogacy have helped many couples to enjoy the bliss of parenthood.

However, still in India, people are not fully aware of surrogacy and IVF.

So, here we have come up with common questions people might have about the same.

What is IVF?

IVF stands for in vitro fertilization.

It is a type of Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART).

In IVF a woman’s egg and a man’s sperm are combined in a laboratory for embryo development. If fertilization is successful, the embryo is then transferred into the uterus using a syringe through a catheter.

Pregnancy will occur if the embryo successfully implants into the lining of the uterus.

After a few days of embryo(s) being placed in the uterus, the doctor calls the patient for a blood test to confirm her pregnancy.

What is the cost of IVF in India?

The IVF treatment cost varies from person to person. Some people are fortunate enough to have a baby in one cycle but some may need multiple cycles’ treatment.

What is Surrogacy?

Surrogacy means the process of carrying and delivering a child for another person. It is the practice whereby one woman carries a child for another with the intention that the child should be handed over after birth.

There are two types of surrogacy – traditional surrogacy and gestational surrogacy.

Traditional Surrogacy – A surrogate mother is artificially inseminated, either by the anonymous donor or intended father and carries the baby.

Gestational surrogacy – In this type of surrogacy, an egg is removed from the intended mother or an anonymous donor and fertilized with the sperm of the intended father or anonymous donor. The embryo is then transferred to a surrogate who carries the baby.

Just like other countries, two types of surrogacy arrangements are being practiced in India. That is commercial surrogacy and altruistic surrogacy.

In Commercial surrogacy, the surrogate mother is paid for carrying a child.

In an altruistic surrogacy, the surrogate mother receives no financial rewards except the necessary medical expenses. All this is governed by Laws.

Whether it’s IVF or Surrogacy both process requires supervision and expertise. That is why it is always suggested to consult experts before attempting surrogacy or IVF cycle.
