Success Story at Vedansha Hospital – Doctor Speaks #1

As a doctor, you get to meet and treat a lot of patients.
And thus build lot of memories. And remember a lot of anecdotes.
Some of these remain with us for a long time.
One such story is of this very special couple.
So this lady was visiting her sister-in-law who had just delivered at our maternity unit. It was all life as usual.
The SIL however knew this lady’s situation. She knew how they (the couple) had been trying for a kid, had undergone different treatments but still could not conceive.
So she just casually asked her to see me. Initially the lady was reluctant but somehow the lady did visit me. She also convinced her husband to meet.
They were a couple who had given up all hopes. They had been through several treatment regimens and were no longer in a mood to try again… till that point in time that is!
In our meet, of all things we discussed, the most important thing I asked them to do was not to lose hope and give it another try.
We started with the treatment – Laparoscopy, IUI and even after giving these our best shot; we still could not any succeed.
That time I didn’t have my own IVF setup. So I referred them to a renowned IVF specialist in the city. They tried IVF but still could not conceive.
After a break, they decided to undergo a similar procedure in Pune, and requested me to accompany them. I was no longer treating them. But it was a relationship that had flourished. They trusted me and just my presence brought confidence for them. Unfortunately, even the Pune visit did not yield any positive result.
But even after all these attempts, their morale was not down. They had this satisfaction that they tried. And even if it didn’t work, life is still a beautiful blessing to continue living happily.
They decided to adopt, and luckily they did get a chance to do so – an infant girl just got new parents. And thus the beautiful phase of parenthood started for them.
And guess what…in six months; they called me to share another good news. The lady had conceived naturally and they were expecting! They welcomed a new baby boy at my hospital and thus now became proud parents to two kids.
The story that began with them reluctantly meeting me and starting the treatment, finally concluded with eventually the baby getting delivered by me only.
Their SIL who referred her to me takes all the credit as she was the one who convinced them to visit me. 🙂 She is the new Bua afterall 😃
God is great. It is kind to people who don’t give up.
This couple is great example of how if a person doesn’t lose hope, does stand a chance of getting through. Being disappointed and giving up is just not an option.
As a Doctor, it is stories like these that keep us going.
Stories of Hope.

Medical Emergencies that might arise during Pregnancy

#KnowledgeSeries #VedanshaHospital
Maternity emergencies:-
Life threatening problems for mother and baby are called as obstetric emergencies. They are as follows:
Emergencies that may arise during pregnancy:

• Miscarriage – It can be also called as spontaneous abortion, which results in the loss of foetus before 20 weeks of pregnancy or gestation. It mostly happens in the period of first trimester or first three months of pregnancy. A miscarriage can happen due to various reasons and cannot be controlled when it starts; the mother might need a proper treatment for infection, or to remove remaining tissue from the body.

• Ectopic pregnancy – It happens when the fertilised egg implants in one of the fallopian tubes (it carries eggs from the ovaries to the uterus) and grows outside the main cavity of uterus (womb). It is also called as ‘tubal pregnancy’. This type pregnancy cannot continue as the fertilised eggs cannot survive outside the uterus and this can result in serious loss of blood. If treated early, only medication is sufficient; but in emergency, surgery is required.

• Placental abruption – It happens when the placenta separates from the uterus before childbirth – occurs mostly around 25 weeks of pregnancy. It can cause vaginal bleeding, lower abdominal pain and severe low blood pressure.

• Placenta praevia – When placenta partially or totally covers the opening in the mother’s cervix. In this, placenta attaches to the lower part of the uterus which partly or completely blocks the opening of the womb. Mother may suffer from vaginal bleeding throughout pregnancy and during delivery.

• Pre-eclampsia and eclampsia – Dangerous pregnancy complications -induced high blood pressure (hypertension) and protein in the urine (proteinuria). It usually begins after 20 weeks of pregnancy and causes swelling in legs and water retention. It can lead to serious complications for mother and baby. If not treated properly, pre-eclampsia is converted to eclampsia (development of seizures in woman with pre-eclampsia).

• Premature rupture of membranes (PROM) – Rupture of amniotic fluid before contractions or labour begin. If the waters break before 37 weeks of pregnancy and leads to leakage of amniotic fluid or infection of the amniotic sac it is called as preterm premature rupture of membranes (PPROM) and is an emergency situation.

Doctor’s day is celebrated on 1st of July every year in India remembering the great physician in India Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy, who was the chief minister of west Bengal and a Bharat Ratna awardee.

Doctors are the one who are constantly working for your betterment of health. They are treated as being next to God in our country.

They always try to treat us in every possible way they could. They care for us and are angels in our lives. But sometimes even they fall short of getting rid of the patient’s disorder. This could be due to many reasons like patient’s response to the treatment, or some other issue like will power of the patient. And in such cases, many a times, doctors face the wrath of the patient’s angry relatives.

They try every possible way to cure the patients but then healing of patient does not solely depend on the doctor. We should respect them and their profession as they are our life saviours, and we should not be hostile with them in case the treatment doesn’t succeed.

In this pandemic, doctors were on their toes to take care of patients who were suffering from corona and from other diseases also. They were performing their duties 24/7 to cure the patients. They were risking their lives for us so that we remain safe and healthy. They were also facing lots of personal problems like doctors who were tenants were told to leave the property because they were working for corona patients and other such ridiculous societal behaviour. A lot of doctors died curing their patients. They were consistently at health risk. They also have their families but they dedicated their time curing patients and taking care of them.

We should be thankful to them from the bottom of our heart and we should mean it. They are the warriors.

This Doctor’s Day, lets pray for them and their wellbeing; if they are healthy we will be healthy. So let’s add happiness and positivity in their lives by respecting them and their profession.
